Sewing Adventure: Drafting My Own Shirt Pattern

From 2020

Soooo… How’ve you been? In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve updated my blog. My blog has been stagnant, but my sewing adventures have not. The Pretty Shirts series has held my attention for a long time and the journey has been somewhat rewarding.

The pattern that I used in Pretty Shirts II was okay. But for me, okay is not good enough. So instead of modifying the pattern, I decided to make my own. The website Blueprint has excellent pattern drafting classes. I took the one on drafting a Moulage. Then I adapted it to creating a pattern for a button down shirt. It took at least 2 months to get through the class exercises and then draft my own pattern.

Forward to Today: I wrote the above unpublished post 6 years ago!

Here is the 2016 update. 6 years ago, I drafted my own pattern, and NOW it is almost finished. It’s been years of continuous improvement, the sleeves, the packets, the collar, the hem. Everything, over and over again. It’s not perfect, but I like it.

Here is my pattern. Pictured below are the Front and back bodice, back yoke and sleeves

And here is my shirt:

Not bad eh?

I know you have questions. How did you do the sleeve plackets and the buttons? Did you ever fix the sleeves? Addie and I are glad you asked.

Stay tuned! I will address this and more in future posts.

See you soon!
